Unwound [ Open ] [NLT]

Elix watched as the wind blew a bit, pushing tall grass to the ground. It was rather chilly, so he pulled the jacket he was wearing closer, listening to the sound of farm machines and other tools work away at things. He was at the top of a large hill, staring down at probably miles of farmland. This would be a good place to stay... he told himself. Unwinds probably come here all the time. He scowled a bit in disgust, smelling things from a cow field that was more than indescribable. Elix guessed it was probably Kansas, or maybe even Kentucky. He may have been had a few screws loose in his head, but not enough to be unwound.

Smiling, Nyx clutched the bag of food she'd managed to beg off the woman in the nearest farmhouse, thinking about how far she'd come in her acting skills since she'd started running, two years agol. She reached where she'd hid her backpack and slipped the various cans into it, hoisting the pack onto her sholders and flitting into the nearest cornfield. She was happy that this field haden't been harvested yet, it was season after all. While the corn was fantastic for shelter the major drawback, other than the sharp husks, was that you coulden't /see/ anything, not knowing anything was ahead of you until you were right on it. In this confusion, Nyx found herself coming upon a hill with tall grass covering it and looking at a boy, about her age. She looked at him silently for a moment, he was turned away from her, and decided that a boy as ratty looking as he had to be a runaway unwind. Deciding it woulden't leave her any worse off she coughed, signaling her presence.

He looked over, widening his eyes a bit. He wrapped one hand around a small pocketknife which was in his pocket. He didn't say anything at first, just looked at her, assessing the situation. She looked a little dirty, and like she'd been living homeless for a bit. Like an Unwind. "Unwind?" Elix asked, voicing his thoughts.

"Well," Nyx said, running a hand through her short hair, her eyes following the boy's hand as it went to his pocket. "That depends. Would I be right in assuming you're an Unwind?"

"What's your name?" She demanded, a bit wary although she was almost completly sure he was safe.

He raised an eyebrow. "What's yours?" He asked, leading them away from the question. He knew that, eventually, he'd have to give a name, so he siphoned through them in his head. He chose the name Jeremy Longstin. Yes, Elix said to himself. I'll tell her that's my name.

"Nyx" She said without hesitation. After all, she diden't even go by her given name anymore so there was no danger in telling someone her name, especially if they were a fellow runaway.

"Elix," He said, after she had told him. Damn! Oh well, too late. He looked at the runaway, up and down, wondering if he looked the same way. Tiredness, no exhaustion, filled his body, and he realized there was no reason to hide the details from another runaway. They were all the same. Running away from the authorities, taking whatever steps necessary.

""We are kind of exposed up here." Nyx pointed out, looking around at the land below them, her slight agoraphobia at being in an open space telling her to go somewhere sheltered.

He nodded, and gestured his hand, as if to say Follow. Elix began walking towards the rather dark forest, not looking back to see whether she was following him.

Nyx quickly caught up with Elix, rolling her eyes. "So, why were you going to be unwound?" She asked buntly.

"It's a long story," He said, looking back at her. He pushed some bushes away, entering into the forest.
